Atlanta Hawks guard Dyson Daniels exploded for a career-high 28 points, spearheading a monumental upset against the reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics on Tuesday night. The 117-116 victory, described by one commentator as an “upset of biblical proportions,” saw the 21-year-old Australian shine on both ends of the court, adding seven assists, six steals, and three rebounds to his impressive scoring tally. This performance, coming in the absence of star guard Trae Young due to an Achilles injury, underscores Daniels’ rapid development and solidifies his role as a key contributor for the Hawks.

Daniels’ performance was lauded as the “best game of his career” by commentators, particularly given the added responsibility he shouldered with Young sidelined. He consistently attacked the basket, finishing with driving layups and floaters while also facilitating for teammates Clint Capela and Larry Nance Jr. His defensive prowess was equally impactful, disrupting passing lanes and generating crucial turnovers. The six steals added to an already remarkable season for Daniels, who now boasts 36 steals through his first 10 games with the Hawks, the most in that span for any player since Allen Iverson in 2003.

The game itself was a back-and-forth affair, with the Celtics initially struggling to find their rhythm from beyond the arc. The Hawks, playing without their primary ball-handler, relied on off-ball movement, screening, and offensive rebounding to generate scoring opportunities. Daniels’ emergence as the de facto point guard proved crucial, as he orchestrated the offense effectively, getting into the paint and creating opportunities for himself and his teammates.

Despite trailing by double digits at halftime, the Hawks refused to back down. They chipped away at the Celtics’ lead throughout the second half, showcasing their resilience and determination. The final minutes were particularly tense, with both teams trading blows. A clutch tip-in by Onyeka Okongwu off a Daniels miss ultimately sealed the victory for Atlanta with just seconds remaining. The Celtics had two final chances to snatch the win, but the Hawks’ defense held firm, securing the improbable upset.
